The Nicolet National Forest is super close to the resort – just about a 15 minute drive takes you into the forest and a few minutes later you can reach the Franklin Lake Trail. It’s a gorgeous nature trail that walks you through the flora and fauna of the Northwoods and you can look over Butternut Lake and enjoy the Hemlocks in the place called the Cathedrals – you will get it when you get there. They have a nice booklet that goes along with the hike and you can stop at the numbers and read the information.
Here is the information pulled off the Vilas County Website – just FYI there is a small fee to park.
Take the time to stroll along the “Avenue of the Giants.” Enjoy northern hardwood, pine and hemlock forests with some trees over 400 years old. A short loop at the start of the trail is wheelchair accessible. Parking area (sticker required) is located beyond the Franklin Lake boat landing off Forest Road 2181 on the right. Part of the Nicolet National Forest, Franklin Lake Trail is the trailhead for Hidden Lakes Trail. *Pets not allowed on groomed ski trails.
